An Impact tool uses a relatively low torque motor which supplies rotary inertia to a special clutch mechanism. The mechanism converts this inertia into a series of impact blows which applies a torque to the fastener.
The effect is similar to torque obtained when a hand wrench is placed on a nut and the opposite end is struck with a hammer. An impact tool does not transmit torque reaction back to the operator, and enables fasteners to be safely tightened to high torque values. ?The maximum torque is determined by the size of the impact tool, the air pressure and the length of time the tool is impacting the fastener.
